FR2-2RS Flanged Sealed Bearing 1/8x3/8x5/32 inch Bearings

Building a prototype. VXB had just what I needed.

Precision fit in on a 3 8" track

I had to drill about 100 3 8 inch holes using a new part as a template. I wanted to do this by drilling pilot holes and not using the template directly because it would eventually be ruined before I got finished. So I thought that I might be able to use a 1 8 X 3 8 ball bearing to guide a 1 8 inch pilot drill bit. It works perfectly. The drill bit is a very close fit and the bearing spins freely as the drill advances through the new material. In my search for the bearing I discovered that they make them with a flange. This makes it a perfect tool as it does not fall into the template hole. This also provides a space between the bearing and the working material. This is first filled with oil but as the drilling advances the first chips formed fill this space and typically lift the bearing out of the hole. But by then the hole is well on it way and the bearing is no longer needed as a centering device. This turned out better than I ever thought it might. This can be done with any size hole if you can find a bearing with the correct OD ID.
